FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions students and families ask most.

Ideally, the summer before junior year — that gives us time to build a thoughtful school list, develop your application strategy, and start working on essays before the pressure of senior year sets in. That said, it's never too late. Many students start in the fall of senior year and still benefit enormously from the guidance.

There are no minimum requirements. Northbound works with students across a wide range of academic profiles — from students targeting highly selective schools to those building a strong application for state universities and liberal arts colleges. The process is the same: understand your story, build a smart list, and present yourself as compellingly as possible.

Two things set Northbound apart. First, Ben has been through the process himself — three application cycles, forty-plus applications, sixty-plus campus visits. He knows what it feels like to be rejected, to rebuild, and to succeed. Second, every student works directly with Ben — not a junior associate, not an automated tool. You get his full attention and genuine investment in your outcome.

No — and that's intentional. Admissions officers are skilled at identifying essays that don't sound like the student who wrote them. Our job is to help you find your story, develop your voice, and craft an essay that is authentically yours. We guide, brainstorm, and give detailed feedback — but every word comes from you.

Northbound intentionally limits the number of students per cycle to ensure every student gets the attention they deserve. Ben doesn't take on more students than he can serve well — which means availability is limited, especially in the fall of senior year.

The free consultation is a 30-minute conversation — no pitch, no pressure. We talk about where you are in the process, what your goals are, and whether Northbound is the right fit. You'll leave with at least one or two concrete things you can act on immediately, regardless of whether we work together.

Yes. Transfer admissions is a distinct process from freshman admissions — the essays are different, the timeline is different, and the strategy is different. Ben has experience guiding transfer students and offers dedicated transfer application consulting.

Yes. While Northbound is primarily a college admissions consulting practice, Ben offers guidance on the financial aid process — including FAFSA, CSS Profile, understanding award letters, and scholarship applications. Many students find that a strong application strategy and scholarship guidance together can significantly reduce the cost of college.
